| Erbil, 350 Km North
of Baghdad enjoys, like the rest of the region,
stability, security and an unexpected economic
boom, so much that the entire area looks like a
huge work zone. It is considered one of the oldest cities
in the world, and is known by a variety of different names:
Erbil, Irbil, Erbil, Hewlêr.
For many centuries, the city of Erbil has been
an important communications centre; it was the
main stop on the Silk Road, and there is
strong evidence of its imposing past in the citadel, a historical
centre rich in archaeological remains.
Erbil International Airport today is the destination
of direct flights from the main cities in Europe
and the Middle East; public transportation relies
on a bus network and a well-organised taxi service.
Parliament Capital of the
Autonomous Region of Kurdistan and today the most secure
city in the Iraqi territory, it holds the
highest concentration of petroleum resources.
The Iraqi Kurdistan is also the most immediate geographical
gateway into Iraq, and offers great opportunities
for business without the lack of security that
is such an issue in the rest of the country.
Iraq’s government program anticipates
the construction of 1 million dwelling units per
year for 5 years, in addition to schools, hospitals,
railroad networks, exchanges, roads and highways.
The investment options are virtually unlimited given the
priority needs of the country, which comprise health care,
schools, water, electricity, telecommunications, sanitation
services, agriculture, infrastructure and transportation,
and other productive activities in general.
